MySQL scalability depends on getting many things right including the architecture, hardware, operating system, MySQL version, MySQL configuration, schema design and indexing, and query design. To avoid having any one of them become the bottleneck that limits the scalability of the entire system, you need to follow best practices in all of these technology areas. Each area deserves its own webinar so we won’t go into the trenches to explore every one in depth. Instead, we will provide an overview of MySQL scalability which highlights the most important considerations and best practices for each of these areas.

Percona Toolkit is a must-have set of tools that can help serious MySQL administrators perform tasks that are common but difficult to do manually. Years of deployments by tens of thousands of users including some of the best-known Internet sites, have proven the reliability of the Percona Toolkit tools for MySQL.

In this presentation, you will learn how you can use some of these tools to solve typical, real-world MySQL database administration challenges, such as:

· Selecting which queries you should try to optimize to get better response times

· How to efficiently purge data from a huge table without putting too much load on your server

· How to check which tables are affected when someone accidentally wrote to a replica and fix the problem without rebuilding the tables

· How to gather data for performance problems that happen randomly and last only a few seconds

· How to run ALTER TABLE on your largest tables without downtime

Join Stephane Combaudon as he demonstrates how to use Percona Toolkit’s pt-query digest, pt-archiver, pt-table-checksum, pt-stalk, and pt-online-schema-change to address these MySQL challenges and more in all MySQL platforms including MySQL 5.6.

MySQL 5.6 offers many long-awaited features. Among the biggest advances in functionality are the enhancements in query planning and optimization. How do we take advantage of this new functionality? In this webinar, we will examine the difference between MySQL 5.6 and MySQL 5.5 query performance in detail by:

• Comparing the low level row operations, EXPLAIN output, and execution time of the same queries
• Checking what changes are transparent to applications and which require some statement rewriting
• Determining if subselects must still be transformed into JOINS for better performance
• Discussing ICP and MRR, and how they can help us to get better query times
• Determining if a merge_index strategy can now be used efficiently

At the end of the webinar, you will be able to measure the practical impact of different querying strategies by comparing MySQL 5.6 and MySQL 5.5 results and understanding how some of the new profiling tools included in MySQL 5.6 make the query optimization process easier.
